Bali National Golf Club
“Renovated a couple of years back, this has to be my favourite course of all time at the moment. When I played, the course was set up for a competition and the fairways & greens were so pristine, the ball appeared to float above the grass.
However, these weren’t the most endearing features, for that I would say that I’ve never experienced such wonderful rough in terms of selection of grass, reeds, flowers, sand etc, and the way they actually made the really hard holes seem so much easier to play. I played off the blue tee’s and managed to shoot a round 80, that considering how I played, would have been a 74 on any other average course.
A real must to put on your to-do list of golfing experiences in Asia. I’ve recommended the course to a few well travelled golfers I know, who all came back and said, “you were right. We cancelled our game at the other courses the next day and played again. Say no more.”
The Race to Dubai Earth Course
“If ever there was a test of golf off the back tee’s, this 7,200 yard monster, that when watching on the TV looks as flat as a pancake, has the ability to test your patience and your scorecard for sure.
My two rounds have produced 94’s on both occasions, something I felt pretty good about, especially as two of my playing partners shot 110 & 150 respectively. Getting on the greens that are surrounded by monster bunkers in most cases, would be considered the easy part done, as the size and undulation of the greens, coupled with the regular 10.5+ on the stimp meter, van result in many a 3, 4 and even 5 putt greens.
Soft hands and patience are the order of the day when you play here, as well as swallowing your pride and playing off the forward tee’s, something I’ve requested from the member I play with the next time round.”
Blue Canyon Phuket
“I first had the pleasure of playing The Canyon 14 years ago and have made regular pilgrimages to tame the beast, with mixed results. Still possibly one of the best course designs around Asia, with great use of the original tin mine it was carved out of.
Tight fairways, testing rough, fast & small greens make it a very challenging course, whatever tee boxes you decide to play from. Add in the fact that on any given day you will be asked to walk the course for four and a half hours, and you are in for a fun day out.
Fortunately, they have beer stops every 3 holes, so well needed fluids are always on hand with an ice cream sugar rush to keep you going. You will never want for a cold beverage more so, than when you have climbed the steps from the 18th up to the clubhouse. Comfortable shoes and plenty of balls would be the order of the day for any round here.”
Lake View Hua Hin Thailand
“We played the 2 newer nines and found them to be a good test of golf. Plenty of wide open spaces for the many errant shots of our group. Lots of run on the fairways so very beneficial to hit the fairways as you could end up going for the green with 2 or even 3 clubs less. Greens were pretty good and rolled well.
Hua Hin is a great destination for a golf trip.”

The Bluffs Ho Tram – Vietnam
“Fabulous course that is a must to play. A true links style course with both stunning holes and views. If you’re feeling particularly masochistic then play in the afternoon when the wind gets up and turns some holes into absolute monsters. Greens ran fast and true but didn’t make putting impossible.
I challenge anyone to play at the Bluffs and say they didn’t enjoy it.”
